Hot-Electron Heating Caused by Two-Plasmon-Decay Instability

چکیده

LLE Review, Volume 126 66 Introduction High-energy electrons are detrimental to laser fusion because they can preheat the fuel, preventing the high compression necessary for central hot-spot ignition and high gain.1 The direct-drive approach is particularly vulnerable as a result of the long scale length of plasma that exists at the quarter-critical density of the target, although it can also occur in indirectdrive geometry.2

Harvesting the loss: surface plasmon-based hot electron photodetection

Although the nonradiative decay of surface plasmons was once thought to be only a parasitic process within the plasmonic and metamaterial communities, hot carriers generated from nonradiative plasmon decay offer new opportunities for harnessing absorption loss. Hot carriers can be harnessed for applications ranging from chemical catalysis, photothermal heating, photovoltaics, and photodetection...

Saturation of the two-plasmon decay instability in long-scale-length plasmas relevant to direct-drive inertial confinement fusion.

Measurements of the hot-electron generation by the two-plasmon-decay instability are made in plasmas relevant to direct-drive inertial confinement fusion. Density-scale lengths of 400 μm at n(cr)/4 in planar CH targets allowed the two-plasmon-decay instability to be driven to saturation for vacuum intensities above ~3.5×10(14) W cm(-2). In the saturated regime, ~1% of the laser energy is conver...

On Novel Mechanism of a Pump Electromagnetic Wave Absolute Two- Plasmon Parametric Decay Instability Excitation in Tokamak ECRH Experiments

Novel mechanism leading to excitation of absolute two – upper hybrid – plasmon parametric decay instability (TPDI) of a pump extraordinary (X) wave is discussed. It is shown that the upper hybrid (UH) plasmon can be 3D trapped in the presence of both a non-monotonous density profile and a finite-size pump beam in a plane perpendicular to the plasma inhomogeneity direction. This leads to excitat...

Laser-plasma interaction in direct-drive inertial confinement fusion

Hot electrons generated by the two-plasmon–decay instability in direct-drive targets are a preheat concern. A mitigation strategy that employs a layered ablator [V. N. Goncharov et al., Phys. Plasmas 21, 056315 (2014)] has been investigated both numerically and experimentally. The numerical simulations described here predict reduced hot-electron production compared with similar targets using ei...
